Harley-Davidson® Screamin Eagle Pro Street Tuner, Epa Settlement Discussion

There has been a lot of discussion lately as it relates to the settlement between Harley-Davidson® motor company and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the resulting decisions tied to that. As a dealer who has been involved with performance work for a number of years, we are actually pleased with where things are heading. As much as we will miss the Screamin Eagle super tuner, we also recognize that the new tool, the Screamin Eagle pro street tuner is actually a fantastic tool that will serve us for years to come. It still has a great deal of adjustments to make your 2017 Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee Eight run like a rocket. It has calibrations to start with that we can adjust. It has everything and more than you will need. It is just EPA compliant and maintains your warranty.

Many Harley-Davidson® dealers feel that the decision to move to the pro street tuner makes it easier for them to adjust your Harley-Davidson®'s performance without a Dynojet 250IX. One local dealer indicated that a Dyno is no longer necessary since you can just upload a calibration into your Harley-Davidson® now. You have always been able to add calibrations to a Harley-Davidson® with the Harley-Davidson® super tuner. However, you are uploading a calibration that may or may not need some adjustment since every engine is a little different.

With that said, there has never been a more important time to put your motorcycle on a Dyno to get dialed in. With the street tuner, the smaller amount of adjustments are now even more vital to the operation of your Harley-Davidson®.

Yes, you or a dealer without a Dyno can put a laptop in your backpack and ride around with the pro street tuner on record mode. This was available on the super tuner as well.

Yes, you can attempt to put the motorcycle in the areas it needs to accumulate proper data.

However, the reason you still need to Dyno your Harley-Davidson® is that we can put your motorcycle into all of the cells that the motorcycle may or may not see in the future. For example, if you were to have a Harley® dealer throw their laptop in their backpack and ride around the streets of Burlington, Vermont, they would not likely have anyone riding on the back of the motorcycle right? The dealer would accumulate 15 minutes of data, but not when the motorcycle is loaded up with extra weight. A day later, you receive your motorcycle back and you add some clothes to your saddlebags and your passenger climbs on ready to go to Maine. What happens? Well, your Harley-Davidson® not only runs dangerously lean in those areas, but also runs poorly. 15 minutes of data riding around the streets of Burlington is not going to provide a technician with enough data. See the smart tune map (riding around Burlington Vermont with a laptop) versus Wilkins H-D® adjustments. Pay close attention to the left hand side, RPMs and you'll notice pretty quickly that the areas that are white are areas you ride in regularly and have not been adjusted.

Dynometer Map v. Smart Tune Map

In the end, while Wilkins Harley® has invested in a Dynojet 250IX and the technician factory training to Dyno tune your motorcyle, remember, there is a right way and a wrong way to get your Harley-Davidson® to run great. With Dyno tuning, we can see what is happening with the air fuel ratios. With Dyno tuning, we can see what is happening with the spark. With Dyno tuning, we can see what is happening with the throttle sensitivity. With Dyno tuning, we can see if we need to change the volumetric efficiency. Without a Dyno, you can't see what you are doing. It's the same idea if you were blindfolded and we asked you to paint a smiley face on a blank canvas. Sounds simple right? You painted a smiley face, but when you take the blindfold off, is it something you want to show anyone? Probably not. :)
