Retrieving Trouble Codes on Your Harley-Davidson Motorcycle
Odometer Self-Diagnostics
Diagnostic Mode
To enter diagnostic mode, press and hold the trip odometer trigger switch located on the left handlebar controls, while turning the IGN ON.
Note
The trip odometer trigger switch is located in the left-hand control module. The switch signal is sent to the speedometer over the CAN bus. If there is a problem with the CAN bus, the odometer self-diagnostic mode may not function.
- Release the trip odometer trigger switch. "diag" will appear on the odometer display.
- Press and release the trip odometer trigger switch. ECM will appear on the odometer display. It will have either a "Y" or an "N" after it, depending if there are any ECM codes or not.
- Quickly press and release the trip odometer trigger switch to cycle through the modules. Modules include the BCM, SPDO, ABS, and RAD.
- Once the desired module is displayed, press and hold the trip odometer trigger switch.
- If any DTCs are stored in the module, the odometer will display the DTC. Quickly pressing and releasing the trip odometer trigger switch will cycle through stored DTCs.
- When all DTCs have been cycled the odometer will display "end".
- To clear all DTCs in that module press and hold the trip odometer trigger switch, while a DTC is displayed. If DTCs are not to be cleared, quickly press and release the trip odometer trigger switch. The part number of the module will be displayed.
- Press and release the trip odometer trigger switch again to continue to the next module.
- Make note of all DTCs. Clear all DTCs and operate the vehicle to verify that DTCs set and are current. Historic DTCs are not to be diagnosed unless the condition is reoccurring and intermittent.
- Turn IGN OFF to exit diagnostic mode. If IGN is not turned off, the vehicle will exit diagnostics mode when the vehicle starts moving.
Harley Trouble Code Types
There are three types of DTCs: current, pending, and historic. The odometer self-diagnostics displays all codes and differentiates between current and historic with a letter designator.
- Odometer self-diagnostics will display both current and historic DTCs.
- Current DTCs reside in the memory of the ECM, BCM, instruments, radio, or ABS module (if equipped) until the DTC is resolved.
- A historic DTC can be cleared by use of odometer self-diagnostics or after a total of 40 error-free ignition cycles (start and run cycle) have elapsed.
Current DTCs are those that presently disrupt motorcycle operations and are set during the current ignition cycle. To determine whether current DTCs are present, clear the DTCs and operate the vehicle within the parameters for setting the DTC. See the appropriate diagnostic procedures for solutions.
Some DTCs require multiple occurrences or drive cycles to set. When these DTCs are first recognized but have not been repeated enough to be set as current DTCs, they are reported as pending DTCs.
If a particular problem happens to resolve itself, the active status problem is dropped and it becomes a historic DTC rather than a current DTC. DTCs will also lose their current status when the ignition is turned off. If the problem still exists when the ignition is turned on, the code will show as current.
Historic DTCs are stored for 40 ignition cycles to assist in the diagnosis of intermittent faults. On the 40th error-free cycle, the DTC will clear itself.
It is important to note that historic DTCs will exist whenever the system indicates the existence of a current fault. See Multiple Trouble Codes. if multiple DTCs are found.
Diagnostic procedures are designed for use with current DTCs. As a result, they frequently suggest part replacement. When diagnosing a historic DTC, the procedures can be helpful but should not lead to part replacement without verification that the part is faulty.
Emissions-related DTCs will illuminate the check engine lamp for three warm-up cycles after the DTC has transitioned from current to historic.
Multiple Trouble Codes
All DTCs are assigned a priority number to determine the order in which they should be diagnosed. If there are multiple DTCs present, always diagnose the highest priority first.
- Complete the repair.
- Restore connections.
- Clear DTCs.
- Start vehicle. Perform several cycles to verify a code did not return.
- Perform odometer self-diagnostics test to verify repair and DTCs have been cleared. If any DTCs are still present, refer to Diagnostics (Pages 1-2).
Clearing DTCs
Clear DTCs after any diagnostic or repair procedure. The odometer is capable of displaying and clearing ECM, BCM, instruments, radio, and ABS DTCs. Once DTCs are cleared perform a road test to verify DTCs do not return. It is important to perform a road test and not simply start the motorcycle since some DTCs may require vehicle speed or other inputs to validate repair.
Security Lamp
See Figure 1-1. The security lamp turns on when:
- Current DTCs are present in the BCM.
- Non-emission-related DTCs are present in the ECM.

Riding Academy Review
I took part in the Riding Academy at your dealership last week. I just wanted to reach out and share with you my thoughts on the experience. It was awesome. Couldn’t be happier. The bikes were great, the class room and showroom were great. The staff at the dealership were great. The class size was perfect. I may not consider myself a “Harley Guy” but boy can I see why people love it so much. And Pam Martin, man. Whatever you’re paying her, it’s not enough. She was so funny, and supportive. More Surprised than I have Ever Been
Wow. Wilkins. Today, I was more surprised than I have ever been in my 46 years. My wife. Surprised me today, with a 2017 Road Glide from Wilkins…. This is a review for Wilkins, not my wife…so…. 1. I get a full tour of their newer facility addition….wonderfully informational ( I have no idea I have a bike waiting for me there) 2. I walk back out to the show room, after the tour, the lights dim, I look around, every employee is sitting on a bike, good music turns on, a disco ball, and they say my name over a pa, I still am not aware of what’s happening,,,, 3. The pa instructs me to “open my present” and I turn, to see a 10” pop up tent, surrounded with wrapping paper….i tore into it to see my new bike 4. Wilkins setup a special table for me, I quit booze 20 years ago, have a sweet tooth, and they had n/a drinks, gummy bears and a Wilkins dog collar for our dog Over the top, amazing, sentimental, and Wilkins proved to me, that customer service is still well and alive at their dealership….thanks guys/gals…made a very special day for me.. Commitment to Customer Service
The staff at Wilkins Harley-Davidson did everything well. Their commitment to customer service is always incredible. Whether I'm there to buy a gift or a sweatshirt or a new Harley, everyone is friendly and helpful and attentive. I was recently in the market for a different bike, and they showed me lots of options for used bikes, let me get a feel for each one, and explained the differences between the bikes I was considering. The guys listened to what I was looking for in my next bike and then went above and beyond to find me the perfect one, a 2024 Hydra Glide. They also gave me a fair trade-in price for my Road King. So you guys do a ton of customer appreciation events. I'd like to do an employee appreciation event/thing from a customer that's been on the receiving end of the things your employees provide. I'm a student of leadership/climate/environment and it's correlations to Organizational performance and success. Wilkins has it all in spades. And I feel that the feedback loop to the lowest levels of an organization that lets them know their efforts are observed, recognized, and appreciated in important. Smoking meat and feeding good people is a passion and hobby of mine. Although my "hobby" has led me to have a trailer mounted wood fired smoker. I'd like to come by one day and make your crew my signature pulled pork sliders for lunch. Pork, kings Hawaiian rolls, pickled red onions, and a dash of Carolina sauce. Exceeded Expectations
My experience with Wilkins Harley Davidson has always far exceeded expectations. From the moment you walk in the store, they have an excellent staff that is there to greet and help direct you to where you need to go and it's always done with a very warm real smile. Easy, Simple and Enjoyable
Bought my first newer Harley bike in spring of 2020 (2019 Fat Bob) during Covid shutdowns through Mike at Wilkins. Super cool down to earth guy. You can tell he really loves bikes and the Harley culture, seems almost excited about you getting a new bike as you are! Sent in a request yesterday (2024) on their online portal and shortly after mike was getting ahold of me answering all questions I had, sending me videos of bikes I was interested in and getting quotes on them. (And he’s not even a regular salesman there anymore!) Great experience buying at Wilkins. All the staff are extremely welcoming while in the store and during the tour around. Big thanks to mike (my sales guy) and Mandy (the finance lady) for making both my buying experiences in 2020 and 2024 easy, simple and enjoyable. It was indeed a pleasure to meet you on Tuesday, March 19th, during my visit to purchase that beautiful 2014 Super Glide Custom. I had visited Wilkins Harley once before, when my wife and I were driving back from a great weekend in Burlington, May of 2021. You guys had a nice Wide Glide on the floor (Orange and Black flames). You and I conversed and we found out that someone placed a deposit on it just that morning. Oh well. I am happy I was able to finally do some business with you guys this month of March in purchasing the Super Glide Custom this Tuesday past. I also want to commend you on running an outstanding dealership. Your staff is well-trained, friendly, extremely capable, and very customer-oriented. Thought I Knew Good Before Wilkins
not gonna lie I have purchased 5 brand new Harleys from my local dealer (11miles from me) in NH over the past 10 years and I thought they were a good dealer to work with that was until I made and 2.5 hour trip to Wilkins Harley. from first contact with John via phone and then onto texts from John and Mike they treated me like I had been buying bikes from them since the 50's. super transparent pricing very upfront and welcoming when I arrived to look at the different colors of the new 24 RG. they gave me a tour of the dealership and it was right in the middle of a chili cook off they were super busy and still made me fell like I was the only person at the dealership. I have bought more vehicles and toys than I can count over the years, from tons of dealerships, and I can honestly say I have NEVER seen any auto, boat, bike, or other dealership that even comes remotely close to Wilkins and their staff. People are what make an organization, and Wilkins employs the absolute finest. It is evident they all love what they do. From my first phone call to ask about a test ride, to when I walked in the dealership, I was enthusiastically greeted and introduced all around. I instantly felt like I belonged there. Luke was excellent to work with, and the entire sales process was zero pressure. The nice touch was that the GM insists on personally giving you the overview of your new ride, explains all features, and gives you his personal cell number if you have questions. Could I have saved a few bucks buying from somewhere else that sacrifices service for bare bones cost? Probably. Will I sleep like an baby knowing I bought a quality product from a gem of a dealership that treats their customers like close family and will be there for me any time I have a question? Absolutely. There is a reason they are the top rated dealership in New England, and it’s because of the people that work there, that care about the people that shop there. I made my bike purchase last summer and was impressed with the staff in all departments of Wilkins. A friendly and comfortable feeling, not just being treated like a customer, but like I had been coming there for years, even though it was my first time there, ever! The hospitality reminded me of what all American business places USED to be like, but not any longer, except for this place! The American tradition still continues here! I have since had services conducted here, as well as, ordering parts and having them installed here. Exceeded my Expectations
I'd been searching for my new Harley for quite a while. I'd heard nothing but great things about Wilkins, so I checked their inventory. They had the exact bike I was looking for. I emailed asking for information after hours and got a response that night. They were extremely helpful and encouraged me to come in and experience what Wilkins was all about. I set up an appointment and came in. Everything was as advertised and better. I never felt rushed or like I was wasting their time. They took extra time to find me the best payment and rate. Everyone stayed late that night to make sure all my questions were answered. When my wife and I came in to take delivery, we were treated to a party to welcome us to the family. My wife has even started looking at bikes. The final step, the actual delivery of the bike to my house. John (yes the owner) came up in a snow storm and brought it right in the garage. From my experience with the Rider Academy to purchasing a bike, I cannot say enough good things about the folks at Wilkins Harley. These folks go above and beyond to make you feel welcome whether you're buying a motorcycle or not.Being brand new to the motorcycling world, I was fairly apprehensive going into the Rider Academy. This quickly evaporated as Eric made something that is mentally and physically exhausting so much fun. He was serious when he needed to be, incredibly encouraging and very patient. He pushed me to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone and helped me gain confidence. Performance Work without all the talk
I just want to say how great the Wilkins service team is. I have a place that claims to be a dyno tuner very close to me that does performance work on Harleys. They will spend all day talking to you about the build. until they have to dial the bike in on the dyno. I spent a lot of money with them. I brought the bike to Wilkens because the local performance shop could not get it to run right. 2 hours later, the bike was running substantially better and higher horsepower. I wont ever consider using anyone else but Wilkens Harley. Oh yeah, when wilkens cleaned my bike, they buffed all the scratches out that the other place made in doing the work. Total Respect
A friend and I attended a 75th anniversary event on 11/12/22 at Wilkins HD. I had intended to buy a new bike in the spring, however after arriving at the event and watching Wilkins employees interact with the approximate 500 people in attendance (they greeted numerous people by first name) like they were friends. I changed my mind and decided to buy that day. I spoke with Mike a salesman and he amazed me I told him my reasons for wanting a new ride, he showed me three bikes and did not try to push me any which way nor did he try to talk me into something I didn't want. I picked an Ultra limited with the Apex black paint. Mike then introduced me to Jenna who was to do the paperwork. After about 45 minutes the paperwork was done. Jenna then introduced me to another employees (sorry I forgot his name) who walked me thru the different departments and what they could do for me. i was then walked thru the operation and its options right at the bike demonstrating what he was explaining. I also spoke with the owner John and found him to be a caring and attentive person. While standing next to the bike a customer who I did not know came up to me and gave me a bell to attach to the bike to keep the legend of the bell going. This was amazing to me as it reflects on the environment and attitude that the owner and employees have created. Wilkins HD is one unique dealership and have my total respect. Thanks again for a totally great experience.
